The Cork hurling team is set to undergo significant changes in its coaching staff as it prepares for the 2027 season. This follows a disappointing end to their 2026 campaign, which has already seen several departures from the setup.
Key Departures
Ronan Curran, who played a pivotal role alongside head coach Ben O’Connor, has announced he will not be returning next year. Curran, a former teammate of O’Connor and a crucial figure in the 2026 setup, confirmed his decision after meeting with O’Connor post-season. His departure follows that of Gerry Hussey, who recently left his position as performance coach.
This upheaval is not new for Cork, as Niall O’Halloran also exited his role last December before the season began. The coaching team is expected to look quite different as the new season approaches.
Future Prospects
Despite these changes, Ben O’Connor remains at the helm, with the playing squad likely to stay largely intact. However, the uncertainty surrounding the coaching staff has raised concerns among supporters and insiders. There is speculation that Cian O’Neill, who recently left the Kerry footballers, might join the Cork setup, bringing his experience from past successes with Tipperary.
Dom Foley, a former Ireland football international, has voiced concerns about the perceived complacency within the Cork camp, particularly regarding the utilisation of young coaching talent within the county.
Looking Ahead
As Cork hurling navigates these changes, the focus will be on stabilising the coaching team and addressing the unrest that has emerged. The upcoming season presents an opportunity for renewal and growth, but it will require strategic decisions and possibly new faces to guide the team forward.
