The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) remains committed to the integration of its three main bodies, despite recent setbacks. GAA President Jarlath Burns has emphasized the importance of achieving a sustainable and robust outcome in the merger process involving the GAA, the Camogie Association, and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA).
Integration Process Ongoing
Burns addressed concerns about the integration process during the launch of the Hurling Development Committee’s starter pack for 2026 in Belcoo. He clarified that the integration efforts have not ceased, despite the departure of former Irish President Dr. Mary McAleese from her role as chairperson of the steering group overseeing the merger.
Dr. McAleese had expressed doubts about the GAA’s commitment to the integration, particularly as the 2027 deadline for completion is expected to be missed. However, Burns reassured that integration is actively occurring, with boys and girls participating together in hurling and camogie across clubs.
Commitment to Equality
Burns highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the GAA, Camogie Association, and LGFA, stating that all decisions are made from an integrated perspective. He acknowledged the disappointment of missing the initial timeline but insisted that the process is far from over.
GAA Director General Tom Ryan had previously noted that the original schedule was overly ambitious. Burns confirmed that discussions with the Camogie Association and LGFA are continuing, with the aim of ensuring equal opportunities for all participants in Gaelic games.
The GAA’s dedication to integration reflects a broader commitment to fostering inclusivity and equality within the sport, ensuring that every boy and girl can enjoy Gaelic games in the future.
