Georgie Kelly, a well-known figure in Irish football, recently made a memorable journey to support his partner, Kate O’Connor, as she clinched gold at the European Athletics Championships. Kelly, who currently plays for Carlisle United, was in action for his club before making the trip to Birmingham to witness O’Connor’s triumph.

A Journey from Yeovil to Birmingham

Kelly played a crucial role in Carlisle United’s 1-1 draw against Yeovil Town. Despite the demanding schedule, he was determined to be present for O’Connor’s moment of glory. After the match, he took the team bus partway before catching a taxi to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, arriving just in time for the medal ceremony.

The couple’s relationship began when Kelly was playing for Dundalk, O’Connor’s hometown club. Since then, they have managed a long-distance relationship, frequently traveling between England and Ireland.

Balancing Careers and Support

Kelly’s commitment to supporting O’Connor is evident in his frequent travels. He often flies to Belfast to visit her, while O’Connor occasionally visits him in Carlisle. Despite the challenges, they make it work, with Kelly joking about the number of Ryanair flights he’s taken.

O’Connor’s recent success adds to her growing reputation in athletics. The support from thousands of fans in Birmingham marked a significant moment in her career, contrasting with previous experiences where Irish supporters were fewer in number.

As they look ahead, the couple is already planning for future events, including the Olympics in Los Angeles. For now, O’Connor will spend some time in Carlisle, enjoying a break before the next season begins.
