Northern Ireland midfielder Paddy Kelly is eager to advance his international career as the Nations League approaches. The 21-year-old, who plays for League One side Barnsley, has become a key player for his club, featuring in every match this season and serving as vice-captain.

Kelly’s move to Barnsley last season, following a stint at West Ham United and a loan at Doncaster Rovers, has been pivotal. His performances caught the attention of Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill, leading to his international debut in a victory over Luxembourg last November. Kelly scored his first senior international goal in a friendly against France in June.

Promising Start

Kelly’s rise in the national team coincides with a youthful squad, averaging 24 years of age. This mirrors his experience at Barnsley, where manager Conor Hourihane also prioritises youth development. Kelly’s regular playtime in the English Football League has been instrumental in his international call-up.

As Northern Ireland prepares for their Nations League fixtures, starting with a match against Georgia, Kelly is focused on securing his place in the team. The upcoming schedule includes games against Hungary and Ukraine, providing ample opportunity for Kelly to further establish himself.

Adapting to Demands

The new international schedule presents challenges, but Kelly is confident in the squad’s ability to adapt. He believes the experience gained from club football, where players often face congested fixtures, will be beneficial.

With a strong squad and the opportunity to gain more caps, Kelly is optimistic about Northern Ireland’s prospects in the Nations League. The team aims to deliver strong performances and accumulate points in the coming weeks.
