Northern Ireland are set to play at Windsor Park for the first time in 315 days as they host Hungary in a Nations League Group B2 match. This marks their return to Belfast since their last home game on 17 November 2025, where they secured a narrow victory over Luxembourg.
During their time away, Michael O’Neill’s squad played five matches on the road, beginning with a World Cup play-off loss to Italy and concluding with a win against Georgia. This victory in Tbilisi was a significant achievement, considering their previous struggles in away fixtures.
Strong Home Form
Despite the infrequent home games, Northern Ireland have maintained strong form at Windsor Park. Since a defeat to Slovenia in October 2023, only Germany have managed to win in Belfast, and even then, Northern Ireland had several missed opportunities. They have won seven of their last nine home matches, a stark improvement from earlier performances.
Michael O’Neill has expressed confidence in his team’s current phase, emphasizing that the squad is not burdened by past performances. The players are eager to perform in front of their home crowd, with midfielder Patrick Kelly and goalkeeper Pierce Charles particularly excited about the return to Windsor Park.
Travel Challenges
The upcoming match against Hungary presents unique challenges, as Northern Ireland have traveled extensively in recent days. After their game in Georgia, the team returned to Belfast, having traveled further than their opponents, who played Ukraine in Budapest. To manage the travel demands, the team maintained UK time throughout their trip.
Despite these challenges, O’Neill is optimistic about his team’s readiness, highlighting the group’s resilience and determination to perform well in front of their supporters.
