RTÉ has announced a reduction in its coverage of Ireland’s upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Israel. The games are scheduled for September 27 in Debrecen, Hungary, and October 4 in Backa Topola, Serbia. Despite the broadcaster’s contractual obligation to air all of Ireland’s Nations League fixtures, the coverage will be notably scaled back.
Minimal Production and No Studio Analysis
The national broadcaster will not provide studio presentation or punditry for these matches. Instead, commentary will be sourced from the international feed. A small technical team will accompany the Irish squad to the venues in Hungary and Serbia, but there will be no advertising or sponsorship associated with the broadcasts.
RTÉ’s decision comes in the wake of a controversial draw that placed Ireland against Israel, just months after the FAI’s General Assembly voted to propose Israel’s suspension from international football due to alleged breaches of UEFA regulations. Although the motion did not progress, the FAI confirmed its commitment to fulfilling the fixtures.
Protests and Unease
The decision to proceed with the matches has sparked protests, with calls for a boycott from various quarters. FAI officials, including Director of Football John Martin and Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson, have acknowledged the discomfort surrounding the games. Hallgrímsson noted that some players expressed unease about participating.
The home fixture, originally set for the Aviva Stadium, has been relocated to Backa Topola, Serbia. Despite the changes and ongoing protests, the matches are set to proceed as planned.
