Ballymun Kickhams showcased their seasoned prowess to clinch a thrilling one-point victory over Lucan Sarsfields in the Dublin Senior Football Championship. The match, held at Clann Mhuire grounds in Naul, saw Ballymun triumph 0-18 to 0-17, thanks to pivotal contributions from their experienced players.
Veterans Lead the Charge
Under the guidance of Mayo legend Seamus O’Shea, Ballymun entered the second round eager for a win after a draw against reigning All-Ireland club champions Cuala. The 2020 champions seemed on the brink of another setback when Lucan’s Mark Lavin put them ahead 0-17 to 0-16 in the 62nd minute.
However, Ballymun’s seasoned Dublin contingent took control in the dying moments. John Small’s strategic play won a crucial free, which Dean Rock converted to level the score in the 65th minute. A misjudged Lucan kickout then allowed Ballymun to regain possession, leading to Fiach Andrews scoring the decisive point.
Key Performances
Dean Rock was instrumental, finishing with 0-7, including a vital two-point free early in the second half. James McCarthy, now retired from inter-county football, contributed significantly with a two-pointer in the opening period. Meanwhile, Longford native Keelin McGann continued his impressive form, adding three points to his tally, following a strong performance against Cuala.
Ballymun initially led 0-11 to 0-6 after 25 minutes, but Lucan fought back with efforts from Rian Doherty, Matthew Guilfoyle, and Cillian Gavin, narrowing the gap to a single point by halftime. Despite Lucan’s late surge, Ballymun’s experience proved decisive, with Rock equalising and Andrews securing the win.
Looking Ahead
This victory places Ballymun on three points from a possible four in Group 4, positioning them well for advancement to the knockout stages. The blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent continues to be a formidable force for the north Dublin club.
