Gavin Bazunu’s recent decision to step back from Ireland’s matches against Israel has sparked considerable tension within the squad. The goalkeeper informed manager Heimir Hallgrímsson of his unavailability for the fixtures, although he remains open to playing against Austria.
Squad Reaction
The announcement led to a chaotic scene in Debrecen, Hungary, where a planned press conference and training session were delayed. The team held a lengthy meeting, resulting in a significant majority voting to proceed with the fixtures, as confirmed by FAI chief executive David Courell. Despite this, eight other players reportedly shared Bazunu’s concerns but chose to stay with the team.
Exclusion from Discussions
Former Ireland manager Brian Kerr expressed concern over Bazunu’s exclusion from the discussions. Kerr noted that Bazunu felt isolated, not being informed or involved in the team’s meeting or vote. This exclusion has reportedly left Bazunu feeling sidelined by some teammates and the FAI.
Manager’s Perspective
Heimir Hallgrímsson clarified that he had spoken to all outfield players individually but did not extend this to the goalkeepers, leaving that responsibility to others. He emphasised that all players were aware of the fixtures and had the option to decline participation if uncomfortable.
Bazunu’s Statement
Bazunu later issued a statement highlighting his decision as one based on personal beliefs and principles, not against any specific community. He stressed the importance of standing up for his convictions, despite the potential fallout.
