Michael O’Neill has voiced concerns over the Republic of Ireland’s attempts to recruit Arsenal’s young talent, Ceadach O’Neill. The Northern Ireland manager believes that young players should not be pressured into changing their international allegiance early in their careers.

The 18-year-old forward, who has been part of Northern Ireland’s youth system, remains in their 28-man squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. Despite making his senior debut in June, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has shown interest in him, a move that has frustrated O’Neill.

FAI’s Approach

The FAI’s interest in O’Neill predates his senior appearances for Northern Ireland. John Martin, the FAI’s director of football, has been proactive in pursuing players eligible for the Republic, citing the importance of exploring all options.

During a recent visit to Dublin with Arsenal, O’Neill was asked about his international future but remained non-committal, suggesting that decisions would be made in due course.

O’Neill’s Concerns

Michael O’Neill has expressed that such situations require careful handling, especially when a player has been part of a national setup from a young age. He pointed out that while the rules allow for such approaches, they can place undue pressure on young players.

He also noted that Northern Ireland has benefited from similar situations, citing examples of players who have switched to their side. However, he emphasised the importance of allowing players to develop without external pressures.

Player’s Perspective

Despite the ongoing speculation, Ceadach O’Neill appears content with Northern Ireland. He reportedly extended his stay during a recent training camp, indicating his enjoyment and commitment to the squad.

Ultimately, the decision lies with the player, and O’Neill maintains that Ceadach is happy within the team, urging that he be allowed to focus on his development and enjoyment of the game.
