Connacht’s United Rugby Championship season began with a challenging encounter against the Stormers at Dexcom Stadium in Galway. Despite a promising first half, the home side succumbed to the visitors’ strength and tactical prowess in the second half, resulting in a disappointing start to their campaign.
First Half Drama
The match kicked off with the Stormers showing early intent. Ruhan Nel nearly scored within the first six minutes, but a crucial tackle by Mack Hansen kept the scores level. Jurie Matthee soon opened the scoring for the Stormers with a successful penalty kick.
Warrick Gelant extended the visitors’ lead with a try, following a well-executed kick and sustained pressure on Connacht’s defence. Matthee’s conversion put the Stormers further ahead.
Connacht responded in the closing minutes of the first half. Hansen, returning from a foot injury, scored a try to narrow the gap. Shortly after, Josh Ioane capitalised on a turnover to give Connacht a slender lead at halftime.
Stormers’ Second Half Surge
The second half mirrored the first in intensity. Connacht’s Sam Gilbert made a crucial defensive play, preventing a try by Seabelo Senatla. However, the Stormers gradually took control, with Sazi Sandi scoring after a sustained attack, putting them back in front.
As the match progressed, the Stormers’ dominance became evident. Late tries from Vernon Paulo and Ezekiel Ngobeni, along with a conversion by Yaqeen Ahmed, sealed the victory for the visitors, leaving Connacht unable to respond.
Connacht’s lineup included key players like Gilbert, Hansen, and Ioane, while the Stormers featured talents such as Gelant and Matthee. Despite a spirited effort, Connacht’s opening night ended in defeat, highlighting areas for improvement as the season progresses.
