Ulster’s spirited second-half rally was not enough to prevent a 34-29 defeat to Edinburgh in their opening match of the United Rugby Championship. The game, held in Belfast, saw Edinburgh dominate the early stages, building a substantial 34-5 lead by the 55th minute.
Edinburgh’s Early Dominance
The Scottish side took control from the outset, with tries from Freddy Douglas, Malelili Satala, Hector Patterson, and Piers O’Conor. James Grayson was on form, converting all four tries and adding two penalties to the scoreboard. Ulster’s only response in the first half was a try from Michael Lowry, leaving them trailing 20-5 at halftime.
Ulster’s Late Surge
Despite the deficit, Ulster found renewed energy in the second half. Tries from Zac Ward, David McCann, and Keynan Knox, all converted by Jack Murphy, brought them back into contention. Murphy also added a late penalty, contributing to a 24-point surge. However, the comeback fell just short, with Ulster securing two bonus points for their efforts.
Looking Ahead
Ulster’s performance in the latter stages of the match offered some positives, particularly the impact of their replacements. The team will aim to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Glasgow next week. Despite the loss, the bonus points could prove valuable in their quest to reach the top eight of the URC for the first time in three years.
Ulster fielded several new signings, with eight players making their debuts, which may have contributed to their slow start. However, the team will need to address their early-game issues to improve their performance in upcoming matches.
