Derry City’s interim manager Mark Connolly has confirmed that he will continue with the current squad as James McClean remains absent. McClean, who returned to Derry City in January, has not been part of the starting line-up since July following a contract dispute in August.
Connolly, who stepped in as interim manager during the fallout, has navigated the situation by focusing on team stability. He emphasised the importance of maintaining focus amidst external distractions, highlighting the team’s resilience and commitment.
Background on Connolly’s Role
Connolly, a former player with a career spanning clubs like Bolton and Dundee United, joined Derry City in 2022. He initially took on the role of director of football after retiring from playing. However, following Tiernan Lynch’s departure in August, Connolly assumed the managerial position.
His connection with the club and community has been a focal point of his leadership. Connolly, who has lived in Derry for several years, understands the passionate nature of the club’s supporters and aims to strengthen this bond.
Focus on League Performance
Under Connolly’s guidance, Derry City recently secured a 1-0 victory against Galway United, reinforcing their league ambitions. The team is also preparing for a crucial FAI Cup semi-final against the same opponents in October.
Connolly’s immediate focus remains on achieving the best possible league finish and providing memorable experiences for the fans, including potential success in the FAI Cup.
While Connolly’s long-term future as manager remains undecided, his current priority is to leave a positive impact on the club, whether his tenure extends beyond the season or not.
