In a fitting tribute to an extraordinary career, Hewick, the wonderhorse trained by Shark Hanlon, has retired, leaving behind a legacy that has captured the hearts of racing enthusiasts worldwide. The retirement party, held at Hanlon’s yard in Carlow, was a grand affair, attended by 1,500 fans who gathered to bid farewell to the horse that turned an €850 investment into a racing sensation.
A Humble Beginning
Hewick’s journey began in 2016 when Hanlon, on a visit to Goresbridge sales, stumbled upon the horse. Despite knowing little about him, Hanlon was captivated by Hewick’s stride and decided to take a chance. This decision would prove to be transformative, as Hewick went on to achieve remarkable success on the track.
Overcoming Early Challenges
The path to glory was not without its hurdles. Hewick’s early races were fraught with challenges, including falls and unseated riders. However, Hanlon’s unwavering belief in the horse’s potential kept him persevering. It took 13 races before Hewick secured his first victory at Kilbeggan in 2020, a turning point that led to a partnership with owner TJ McDonald.
A Stellar Career
Hewick’s career highlights include victories in prestigious races such as the Durham National, Oaksey Chase, and the American Grand National. His triumphs were celebrated not just in Ireland but across the Atlantic, where he became a symbol of Irish racing prowess. A viral meme of Hewick enjoying a pint in a local pub after his American win garnered over 10 million views, further cementing his status as a fan favourite.
The Next Chapter
As Hewick settles into retirement, there is speculation about a potential transition to showjumping. For now, he enjoys a well-deserved rest, indulging in his favourite treat of carrots. Hanlon reflects on the horse’s unique character, noting his exceptional travel abilities and calm demeanour, traits that contributed significantly to his success.
Hewick’s story is a testament to the power of belief and perseverance in the world of horse racing. As he embarks on this new chapter, his legacy continues to inspire, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
