Ireland are set to begin their UEFA Nations League campaign with a crucial match against Kosovo in Pristina. A positive result is vital for Heimir Hallgrimsson’s team as they aim to top their League B group, which could influence their Euro 2028 qualification prospects.

Kosovo, who narrowly missed out on the 2026 World Cup after a play-off defeat to Turkey, have shown significant improvement in recent years. However, they enter this fixture amidst considerable internal strife.

Kosovo’s Squad Challenges

The Kosovo squad has undergone significant changes, with several key players absent due to a dispute with the nation’s Football Association. The controversy stems from calls for FA President Agim Ademi to resign, with players citing governance issues as the reason for their boycott.

Notably, long-serving captain Amir Rrahmani has stepped away from the national team, leading a group of players including Edon Zhegrova, Florent Muslija, Arijanet Muric, Milot Rashica, and Vedat Muriqi in their decision to withdraw.

Manager Franco Foda has had to rely on a less experienced squad for the upcoming matches against Ireland, Austria, and Israel. Among the new faces is 17-year-old Erblin Osmani from Bayern Munich, who could make his debut against Ireland.

Opportunity for Ireland

With Kosovo’s internal issues potentially affecting their performance, Ireland will look to capitalize and secure three valuable points. Hallgrimsson’s side will aim to exploit the opposition’s reduced squad strength and start their campaign on a high note.
