Munster Rugby has responded to criticism regarding their decision to host a Champions Cup fixture against Racing 92 at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork. The match coincides with the tenth anniversary of Anthony Foley’s passing, a revered figure in Munster Rugby history.

Foley, who tragically died in Paris on October 16, 2016, was a legendary player and coach for Munster. The timing of the match, against the same opposition they were set to face a decade ago, has led to calls for the game to be held in Limerick, Foley’s home city and the traditional home of Munster Rugby at Thomond Park.

Critics, including Foley’s former teammate Ronan O’Gara and Limerick TD Willie O’Dea, have expressed disappointment that the match will not take place in Limerick. They argue that Thomond Park would have been a more fitting venue to honour Foley’s legacy.

In response, Munster Rugby explained that the decision to host the game in Cork was made before the opposition and date were known. The club stated that the venue choice was part of a broader strategy to bring major rugby events to fans across the province, following the success of previous fixtures in Cork.

Munster Rugby acknowledged the emotional significance of the anniversary and assured supporters that plans to commemorate Foley have been developed with the support of his family and associated clubs. These tributes include a photo wall at the Marina in Cork and the retirement of the number 8 jersey for the match.

The club emphasised that the decision was not intended to move an anniversary fixture away from Thomond Park, but rather a result of logistical planning made prior to knowing the specific details of the match. Munster Rugby remains committed to ensuring that Foley is honoured with dignity and respect during the event.
