Rachel Lally, a rising star in the boxing world, has been making waves from her base in Dubai. Despite her international presence, the 31-year-old middleweight fighter from Belmullet, County Mayo, remains deeply connected to her roots. Her recent reflections on Mayo’s All-Ireland victory highlight her pride in her hometown and its sporting achievements.
Boxing Beginnings and Professional Rise
Lally’s journey in boxing began alongside Mayo GAA star Ryan O’Donoghue at the Golden Gloves ABC in Belmullet. Under the guidance of O’Donoghue’s father, Michael, who served as a coach, Lally honed her skills in the ring. Her dedication has paid off, as she now boasts an undefeated professional record with five wins and one draw.
Ranked fifth by the WBA and eighth by the WBC, Lally has already claimed two titles since turning professional less than two years ago. Her ambition is clear: she aims to challenge for a world title, with her sights set on the belts held by American champion Claressa Shields.
Challenges and Triumphs
Lally’s path to success has not been without its challenges. After stepping away from boxing for nearly a decade, she returned to the sport, initially for fitness. However, her passion reignited, leading to a professional career that has transformed her life. Her first professional fight ended in a draw, but she has since secured five consecutive victories, including three knockouts.
Boxing has been more than just a sport for Lally; it has been a lifeline. Growing up in an area affected by youth suicides, she credits boxing with providing the discipline and focus that helped her navigate difficult times.
Pride in Mayo’s Victory
While Lally’s career continues to ascend, she remains a proud supporter of Mayo GAA. Watching the county’s All-Ireland triumph with her 90-year-old grandfather was a moment of immense pride. The victory was a long-awaited celebration for the people of Mayo, and Lally was thrilled to share it with her family.
As she looks to the future, Lally hopes to bring her boxing success back to Ireland, the UK, or America, aiming for bigger stages and tougher opponents. Her journey is a testament to resilience and ambition, qualities she shares with her fellow athletes from Mayo.
