Roscommon’s Saoirse Wynne has recently demonstrated her exceptional versatility by excelling in two distinct sports. Just days after playing a crucial role in Roscommon’s All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies Football Championship victory, Wynne represented Ireland in the Mounted Games World Team Championships in France.

All-Ireland Glory

Wynne’s intelligent performance in the sweeper role was instrumental in Roscommon’s 2-12 to 0-6 triumph over Fermanagh. Her efforts not only helped secure the championship but also earned her the Player of the Match accolade at Croke Park.

Mounted Games Challenge

Remarkably, Wynne quickly transitioned from Gaelic football to equestrian sports. She travelled to France to compete in the Mounted Games, where her team finished fifth in the world. This demanding sport tests riders’ speed, balance, and teamwork through various relay races.

The journey to the competition was arduous, involving an 18-hour ferry ride and an eight-hour drive. Despite these challenges, Wynne’s dedication and skill shone through.

Balancing Dual Careers

Wynne’s involvement in mounted games began at the Roscommon Pony Club before she joined the Laois Pony Club due to limited local opportunities. Her commitment to both sports is supported by her family and friends, who play a crucial role in managing her busy schedule.

Roscommon’s Resurgence

Roscommon’s journey to the championship was marked by a significant turnaround. After a heavy defeat to Leitrim in the Connacht final, the team regrouped and rediscovered their passion for the game. This newfound belief, bolstered by the addition of Lloyd Kelly to the coaching staff, propelled them to victory in the All-Ireland quarter-final and beyond.

Future Aspirations

With Roscommon’s promotion to senior level, Wynne is determined to compete strongly rather than just participate. Her recent academic achievements in anatomy at the University of Galway also open new avenues for her future beyond sports.

Wynne’s dual success in Gaelic football and mounted games highlights her remarkable talent and dedication, making her a standout figure in Irish sports.
