UEFA has issued a firm deadline for FIFA to release crucial documents and address governance questions by November 2. This move comes amid growing concerns over decision-making processes within FIFA, led by President Gianni Infantino.
Key Issues Raised
The European football governing body has outlined numerous questions in an eight-page letter, focusing on the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) investment, the FIFA Peace Prize, and the handling of USA striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension at the World Cup. UEFA is particularly interested in understanding the decision-making process behind these issues and why the FIFA Council was not consulted appropriately.
UEFA has also questioned the relationship with Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital, asking why it was chosen as the lead investor without a competitive process. The exclusivity agreement with Thrive Capital, linked to the family of former US President Donald Trump, has raised eyebrows.
Financial Transparency
Concerns have been raised about FIFA’s financial practices, including undisclosed payments to Infantino from FIFA’s US World Cup organising entity. UEFA has requested clarification on these payments and their tax implications.
Additionally, UEFA is questioning the necessity of seeking private investment for football development, given FIFA’s strong financial position. The organisation wants to know why increased funding for member associations was tied to external investment rather than using FIFA’s own resources.
Governance and Accountability
UEFA’s letter also addresses the impartiality of FIFA’s electoral committee chair and the extended half-time interval during the World Cup final. These issues, along with others, highlight UEFA’s demand for greater transparency and accountability within FIFA.
While FIFA has yet to respond, legal actions initiated by UEFA in the US may limit FIFA’s ability to provide comprehensive answers. The outcome of this demand for transparency could significantly impact Infantino’s bid for re-election as FIFA president.
