Adam Darby has made history by becoming the first Irish fighter to secure a UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series. The Dubliner achieved this milestone with a commanding TKO victory over American fighter Patrick Rivera in Las Vegas.
Darby, who now boasts an 8-1 professional record, dominated the welterweight bout, which concluded in the third round due to a doctor stoppage. This victory marks the culmination of over a decade of dedication and perseverance in mixed martial arts.
Overcoming Challenges
Darby’s journey to the UFC was not without its challenges. He faced a significant setback early in his career with a 20-second defeat and endured a 17-month hiatus due to a severe hand injury. Despite these obstacles, Darby remained committed to his goal, driven by a passion for MMA that began with his introduction to the sport through kickboxing.
His resilience was further tested when he suffered a broken hand in March 2024, requiring multiple surgeries. However, Darby returned to the cage in April 2025, determined to continue his pursuit of a UFC career.
Inspiring Future Generations
Darby hopes his achievement will inspire the next generation of Irish fighters. He believes the standard of MMA in Ireland has significantly improved, with more fighters now able to train full-time. He cites rising talents like Paddy McCorry and Ger Harris as examples of the promising future for Irish MMA.
Looking ahead, Darby is eager to make his UFC debut before the end of the year, expressing readiness to compete whenever the opportunity arises.
