Aston Villa are actively pursuing a deal to secure the services of Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge, as they look to bolster their defensive line following a series of high-profile departures. The 22-year-old Ecuadorian centre-back, who showcased his talents at the World Cup earlier this summer, has become a primary target for the Premier League club.
Villa’s interest in Ordonez has intensified after negotiations with Southampton for Taylor Harwood-Bellis fell through. The Midlands club had hoped to bring in Harwood-Bellis, but a significant difference in valuation led to the collapse of the deal, with Southampton rejecting an £18 million offer.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed
The need for defensive reinforcements has become urgent for Villa, especially after the recent sale of England international Ezri Konsa to Arsenal. The club’s defensive frailties were exposed in their opening match of the season, a 4-0 defeat to Brighton, highlighting the necessity for new signings before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
Ordonez, who has made 124 appearances for Club Brugge since joining from Independiente del Valle in 2022, is valued at a minimum of £40 million by the Belgian club. Villa are keen to meet this valuation to secure the talented defender’s signature.
Squad Overhaul Underway
Under the guidance of manager Unai Emery, Villa are undergoing a significant squad overhaul. Alongside Konsa, the club has seen the departures of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne. Additionally, there are ongoing concerns regarding the future of striker Ollie Watkins, who has attracted interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
As Villa navigate these changes, the acquisition of Ordonez could prove pivotal in stabilising their defence and setting a positive tone for the remainder of the season.
