Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has expressed continued confidence in the video assistant referee (VAR) system, despite a significant error during the recent Manchester derby. The incident involved Manchester City’s winning goal, where Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position, interfering with play, but the mistake went unnoticed by VAR.
VAR Controversy in Derby
The error led to Manchester City’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, prompting an apology from the refereeing body, Pro Ref, to United shortly after the match. VAR officials Matt Donohue and Blake Antrobus have been sidelined for the upcoming weekend’s fixtures due to their oversight.
Referee’s chief Howard Webb acknowledged the mistake, admitting that the officials were overly focused on a potential offside involving Erling Haaland, neglecting Fernandez’s position. Webb has since engaged with United to address the issue and improve accountability.
Support for Leny Yoro
In other news, Carrick has shown support for defender Leny Yoro following a challenging performance in United’s recent Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton. Despite the setback, Carrick remains optimistic about Yoro’s future, emphasizing the club’s belief in his potential.
Yoro, who joined United from Lille for £52.2 million, has made 55 Premier League appearances, though many have been as a substitute. Carrick highlighted the importance of patience in player development, asserting that the club will not make hasty judgments based on isolated performances.
