Rory McIlroy’s pursuit of victory at the BMW PGA Championship ended in a valiant third-place finish, as Wyndham Clark emerged triumphant with a late surge. The Northern Irishman started the final round five strokes behind the leader, Clark, but managed to level the playing field as the competition reached its climax at Bellerive Country Club.

McIlroy’s Strong Start

McIlroy began his final round with promise, securing a birdie on the opening hole while Clark stumbled with a bogey. Despite dropping shots at the fourth and seventh holes, McIlroy rallied with consecutive birdies, keeping him in contention.

By the 11th hole, McIlroy had drawn level at the top of the leaderboard. However, his momentum faltered as he failed to capitalise on several birdie opportunities over the next five holes. A critical bogey on the par-five 17th, where he found the sand twice, dashed his hopes of clinching the title.

Clark’s Decisive Finish

Clark, who had struggled to find his rhythm earlier in the round, delivered a remarkable finish. He was three over par upon reaching the 16th tee but then executed three consecutive birdies, sealing his victory with a 17-under-par total. This performance not only secured his third PGA Tour win of the season but also propelled him to third in the FedExCup standings.

Patrick Cantlay finished second, just one stroke ahead of McIlroy, while Gary Woodland, Collin Morikawa, and Chris Gotterup shared fourth place.

Looking Ahead

Despite missing out on the top spot, McIlroy’s efforts were rewarded with a substantial $1.36 million prize. He now looks forward to the Tour Championship, where a $10 million prize awaits the winner.

McIlroy’s performance at the BMW PGA Championship demonstrated his resilience and skill, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the season.
