Cristiano Ronaldo’s illustrious career, marked by five Ballon d’Or awards, eight league titles, and numerous other accolades, has cemented his status as one of football’s all-time greats. However, a recent encounter at Lisbon airport left a lasting impression on Wales manager Craig Bellamy, highlighting Ronaldo’s influence beyond the pitch.
Unexpected Airport Encounter
During a pre-season trip to Lisbon, Bellamy, then an assistant at Burnley, witnessed the airport effectively shut down due to Ronaldo’s arrival. The presence of extensive security and police was initially puzzling to Bellamy and his team, who were on a chartered coach.
As they waited, a car arrived, and Ronaldo emerged, surrounded by police. The scene was so striking that even the officers were taking photos. Bellamy described the moment as akin to a presidential arrival, illustrating Ronaldo’s global superstar status.
Facing Ronaldo on the Field
Bellamy, who last played against Ronaldo in 2008, is now preparing to lead Wales against Portugal in the Nations League. Despite missing key players like Harry Wilson and Joe Rodon, Bellamy remains focused on securing a positive result against the formidable Portuguese squad.
Ronaldo, who has announced the 2026 World Cup as his last, continues to perform at an elite level. Bellamy acknowledges Ronaldo’s professionalism and intelligence on the field, noting his ability to conserve energy and maintain his goal-scoring prowess.
As Wales gears up for the challenge, Bellamy encourages his players to embrace the moment and give their all, aiming to remain in the top tier of the Nations League.
